First settlement traces found in Muscat.
2500 BC-2000 BC
The Magan period. Several remains from mining have been found
at the village of Maysar in central-eastern Oman.
1300 BC-300 BC
The Omani Iron Age
1000 BC
Evidences found in Maysar about irrigation systems. (falaj)
300 BC-500 AD
The classical period in Oman
700 AD
Beginning of Arab control and the introduction of Islam.
1507
Muscat is captured by Portuguese
1650
The Portuguese expelled from Oman
1737
Persians invade
1749
The Persian community expelled.
1861
The ruler takes the title "Sultan”
1913
Fight between the Sultan and the Imam. The
interior support Ibadite imams and the coastal areas support
the sultan.
1920
Peace is restored.
1954
A new rebellion is started by a the Imam.
1959
The sultan puts the rebellion down and regain
the control
1967
Beginning of oil production in Oman.
1970
Sultan Said is overthrown by his son in a
bloodless coup. Sultan Qaboos begins a liberalization and
modernization program
1999
Oman and United Arab Emirates (UAE) sign a border agreement
2006
Oman and the US sign a free trade deal.
